From as early as 'K' reg Escorts, Ford has the PATS (Passive anti theft system) This is a chip that is held in the plastic head of the key and is coded to the vehicles engine management system.

Each time the ignition is turned on, the engine management system checks the chip in the key to see if it is one that has been programmed to that vehicle, if it is the immobiliser is switched off and the car can be started, if not the car stays immobiliser.
